A magnitude 7 earthquake in a remote, high-altitude part of Tibet kills 16 people and injures 76, as Typhoon Champi heads toward Japan's Kyushu island. Oxfam warns that funding for what could be the strongest El Niño on record falls far short, with water points drying up across the Sahel and Central American farmers losing their maize harvests. In Yemen, the besieged city of Taiz has been cut off from aid for about three weeks, leaving more than 800,000 people without assistance. Schools in Ethiopia's Tigray region prepare to reopen after renewed fighting. Ebola survivors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo now number about 2,600, and Kenyan contacts begin leaving quarantine. And France reports the first known human case of Shamonda virus.

Typhoon Champi shuts schools, offices and hundreds of flights in Taiwan, leaving one person dead and more than 170 injured, as Japan's Okinawa islands face power cuts and waves up to 12 meters. In Yemen, fighting and fuel shortages threaten water systems serving about three million people in Taiz, including 1.6 million children, as families ration water and cholera spreads. The World Food Programme cuts food aid in Gaza by a third and halves it in the West Bank for lack of funding. In Sierra Leone, new national tests find fewer than one in four second-year primary pupils meet the reading standard. Gavi and UNICEF secure a 40 percent cut in the price of a malaria vaccine. And the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reaches an eighth province.

Oct 22, 2026: Record El Niño Warning, Typhoon Champi and Nigeria's First Ebola Case

Show moreShow less

The UN warns the current El Niño could be the strongest on record, with up to 50 million people facing more hunger, as violent Typhoon Champi bears down on Taiwan and Japan's southern Okinawa islands. In South Africa, more than 400 people, mostly children, fell ill from contaminated tap water in Bronkhorstspruit. In Afghanistan, the UN expects more than 19 million people to face acute hunger this winter as nutrition sites close for lack of funding. Gordon Brown says more than 500 million children need an education, and Education Cannot Wait commits $3 million to get injured and orphaned children in Gaza and the West Bank back to learning. And Nigeria confirms its first case of Ebola in the current outbreak, which began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.Sources:- UN News – El Niño appeal: https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/10/1168639- WMO – El Niño statement: https://wmo.int/secretariat/celeste-saulo/el-nino-and-humanitarian-action- NHK World – Typhoon Champi: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/news/20261022de63409/- Straits Times/Reuters – Taiwan typhoon warning: https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/taiwan-issues-land-warning-ahead-of-arrival-of-powerful-typhoon-champi- TimesLIVE – Bronkhorstspruit water: https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2026-10-21-chlorine-supply-restored-but-bronkhorstspruit-water-not-yet-safe-to-drink/- RFI/AFP – Afghanistan hunger: https://www.rfi.fr/en/international/20261021-millions-of-afghans-to-face-food-insecurity-by-next-year-un-warns- AP via LA Times – 500 million children need education: https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2026-10-20/500-million-children-need-education-un- Education Cannot Wait – Gaza and West Bank: https://www.educationcannotwait.org/news-stories/press-releases/education-cannot-wait-announces-us3-million-bring-palestinian-children- UN News – Nigeria Ebola case: https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/10/1168637Visit https://humanitarianexplorer.

In this inaugural journey of the Humanitarian Explorer, we look beyond the surface of the week's headlines to find the interconnected stories of our global family. We begin by examining the profound challenges facing those on the front lines, from the critical aid blockades in Gaza to the resilience of communities navigating displacement in Sudan and the DRC.

True exploration requires us to look at how we treat the earth itself; therefore, we reflect on a landmark UN resolution for the sustainable management of critical minerals, a step toward a more conscious relationship with the technology that connects us all. We also hold space for the recovery efforts in Malawi and Jamaica as they heal from natural disasters, while celebrating the quiet, steady progress of the African Development Fund and the hopeful strides being made against hunger in the Asia-Pacific region.

This episode is an invitation to stay engaged, to act with intention, and to help build a more compassionate world.

Key topics explored in this briefing:

  • The Bottlenecks of Mercy: Understanding why life saving operations are stalling in Gaza and how conflict is reshaping health services in Africa.

  • A New Policy for the Planet: The UN’s vision for sustainable mining of lithium and cobalt.

  • Cycles of Recovery: Navigating the state of disaster in Malawi and the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica.

  • Investment in Hope: The record-breaking $11 billion commitment to the African Development Fund and the progress of the World Food Programme.
